Join Claire Reynes in discovering the magic that is paper marbling. Marbling is a process that involves floating paints on liquid size to create patterns that are then transferred onto a porous surface. Each participant will have their own marbling vat where they will play with color and explore endless design potential to print onto paper.

Workshop will cover:

  • Preparation of marbling materials, including paints and paper
  • Application of paint to marble bath
  • Basic patterns, including stoning and gel git as well as some simple combed patterns
  • Participants will marble several sheets of paper (sizes 12x18 and 18x24)
  • Instructional packet for at-home marbling

About the Artist:

Tempered East is a small-batch, hand-marbling studio, owned and operated by Claire Reynes, that offers marbling design services, workshops, and one-of-a-kind products. Marbling is a process where pigments are floated on a liquid surface and worked into different patterns that can be fluid and organic or organized and repetitive. Marbling is a joyful expression of color and pattern with many applications and endless opportunities for wonder and invention. Claire’s use of color and pattern is her response to what she observes in nature: a forest of lichen-covered branches and beds of moss, tide pools with barnacle fields, and the richness of color on a wet stone. Through markets and workshops, Claire brings the magic of marbling to people, introducing something they have never seen before and encouraging them to bring something playful and colorful into their world. Her works beyond marbling include handmade paper, sewing, drawing, and experimentation with found materials.
