Course Description

This micro-credential, aligned with standards set by the Smart Automation Certification Alliance (SACA), prepares individuals to build foundational skills in industrial electrical troubleshooting and motor control diagnostics within modern manufacturing environments. Students will develop skills to troubleshoot, test, and remedy faults in electrical motor control circuits and AC variable frequency drives using components such as AC 3-phase AC motors, reversing magnetic motor starters with overloads, drum switches, control relays, timer relays, manual switches, limit switches, pressure switches, and float switches.

Additional skills include adhering to troubleshooting safety practices, performing systems troubleshooting, testing electrical components, using digital multimeters and clamp-on ammeters, interpreting motor control circuit operation, and diagnosing electrical and control system faults using industry-standard troubleshooting procedures.

Level 1: Introduction & Foundation (Est. 6-10 hours)

This level is self-guided, online/asynchronous with Amatrol’s 3rd-party LMS and an in-person written exam. At the end of your introductory training, you will take an in-person exam, which will demonstrate your readiness for the next level. Successful completion earns you the SACA Silver Certification and a Level 1 Badge. Within the Level 1 course, you will register for the exam date (typically scheduled biweekly on Fridays) and location (Orono or Brunswick, ME) of your choice. Upcoming options include:

Level 2: Hands-on Training & Practice (3-Day class)
Here you participate in more rigorous, industry-aligned training through an in-person workshop and practice modules in Orono, ME, typically scheduled once per month. At the end of this training, you will complete an in-person practical assessment to demonstrate your readiness for the next level. Successful completion earns you the SACA Gold Certification and a Level 2 Badge.

Level 3: Experiential Learning and Application (Min. 100 hours)
In this final level, you put your new skills to work in a real-world setting, often right in your current job. Level 3 culminates with reflecting on your experience and having a supervisor or workplace mentor confirm your skill use and performance. Upon completing all three levels, you’ll be awarded a Level 3 Badge and a University of Maine System Micro-Credential for Motor Control Troubleshooting 1.
