Earn a micro-badge while gaining foundational knowledge in craft beer, including brewing basics, beer ingredients, beer styles, beer sensory evaluation, craft brewery operations & marketing, and laws that pertain to craft beer through two-days of lectures, field trips, and tasting sessions.

Learning Objectives 

  • Brewing Basics: Understand the brewing process, covering mashing, boiling, fermentation, and packaging, as well as the principles of recipe development and scaling.
  • Beer Ingredients: Understand the roles of each ingredient, including malt, hops, yeast, and water, in beer brewing processes, and know how each component contributes to flavor, aroma, and mouthfeel in beer.
  • Beer Styles: Can recognize various beer styles based on written information and their history, ingredients, and brewing techniques, from ales and lagers to specialty and experimental brews.
  • Sensory Evaluation: Through guided tastings, the learner acquired a systematic approach to beer sensory evaluation knowledge, enabling the learner to identify the diverse flavors and characteristics of different beer styles.
  • Brewery Operations & Marketing: Understand the operational aspects of a brewery, including equipment maintenance, sanitation, and safety protocols, as well as marketing strategies specific to the craft beer industry.
  • Law: Understand the legal and regulatory aspects of the craft beer industry, including labeling, licensing, and health and safety requirements.

Who should attend?

This program is recommended for a home brewer, beverage server, bartender, catering or restaurant manager, someone looking to start a brewery or someone who desires to gain more knowledge of craft beer.

This course is 2-days. 14 hours, and earns 1.4 CEU’s.

Once enrolled, you will have access to earn a self-paced online level-1 micro-badge (free) in Craft Beverages. Craft Beverage Level 1 will provide an introduction to foundational topics of the craft beverage industry, including legal issues, distribution, and basic beverage types. Once you complete and pass the Foundations of Craft Beer course, you will earn a level-2 badge. Both the level-1 and level-2 badges are requirements to earn a Craft Brewing Micro-Credential. Additional course requirements are in development and will be available in 2025.
