Micro-Credential  70.00  Online

Inclusive Education Benefits Everyone!

Maine is committed to increasing capacity for inclusive education and supporting all school personnel (e.g., special and general educators, educational technicians, instructional specialists, and administrators) to better provide inclusive support to PreK-12 learners. Together we can work to ensure all learners with disabilities have full and meaningful access to general educational peers, curriculum and classrooms.

This training was developed by an interdisciplinary team from the Special Education Department at the University of Maine at Farmington and the Department of Psychology at the University of Maine. Levels 1, 2 and 3 are asynchronous online and participants can move at their own pace to support their learning.

Key benefits

Earning this micro-credential provides practicing PreK-12 educators and support staff, pre-service educators and interested community members with the foundational knowledge about inclusive education and specific skills and tools for implementing a student-centered Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. You will learn to collaborate with families, students and colleagues to create a standards-aligned IEP that prioritizes student access to general curriculum and inclusive settings.
Learn the Fundamentals. Gain intermediate knowledge of:

  • The integrated Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) model and the connection between core instruction, intervention, and specially designed instruction in supporting general curriculum progress.
  • Federal/state requirements for IEPs, grade-level standards, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines, and the key components of an inclusive, standards-aligned IEP.
  • What it means to have access to the general curriculum and a sense of belonging in the general education environment, as well as examples of least intrusive to the most intrusive supports that align with student needs.
  • Roles and responsibilities of an IEP team, focusing on a student-centered, collaborative approach for information gathering and developing the plan, including plans for transition.
Develop and Demonstrate Skills. Practice strategies and apply skills to:
  • Use universal screening, benchmark, and formative assessment data to identify needs and select appropriate assessments for establishing Present Levels, baseline, and progress monitoring.
  • Evaluate and revise IEP content—including Present Levels and goals—to ensure they are standards-aligned, competency-based, and reflective of student strengths and grade-level expectations.
  • Evaluate service delivery and make recommendations to embed IEP goals within general education environments while documenting collaborative service models.
  • Use key questions to center the learner in the IEP process and identify resources to support effective team communication and implementation.
