Course Description

Apply online instruction to real-world problems while gaining valuable Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills. Hands-on assignments are completed on the ESRI ArcGIS platform (software access included in the registration fee). Set your own pace and get instructor feedback on assignments– it’s all online!

The next session of the Maine Geospatial Institute (MGI) Introduction to GIS Mapping course starts August 17, 2026 – register now to secure your spot! Registration remains open through December 1, as space allows. Course materials must be submitted for grading by December 11. We estimate that the micro-credential pathway will take 9 to 10 hours to complete.

Who Should Attend?

MGI offers this professional development opportunity to learners from any discipline who would like to understand and use cutting-edge technology and tools. No prior GIS experience is required.

Introduction to GIS Mapping Micro-Credential Badge

All 3 levels are included with the purchase of this course.

Level 1: Basic Map Skills
Develop an understanding of basic GIS concepts, cartographic principles, and fundamentals of map design, including the discovery of existing map data sources and an understanding of map types and conventions.

Level 2: Create & Access Map Data
Engage in training designed to further GIS practices and develop competencies in preparation for real-world application. Build skills in creating, editing and accessing map data; filtering and subsetting data sets; and issues related to aggregation.

Level 3: Geospatial Project
Complete an experiential learning project, demonstrating the ability to integrate geospatial technology skills, including basic skills in aligning project outcomes to stated goals, map critiquing, and map revision. Upon completing all three levels, you’ll be awarded a Level 3 Badge and a University of Maine System Micro-Credential for Introduction to GIS Mapping.

Technology Requirements: This course content will be entirely online on Brightspace. An email address, access to a reliable internet connection, the newest version of your web browser and a laptop or desktop computer with video/audio capabilities are required to complete this course. Dual monitors are recommended for an optimal course experience.
